OUTREACH + PHILANTHROPY

SASA is committed to advocacy and service within the South Asian diaspora and beyond.

Through collaboration, direct service, and education, we aim to engage thoughtfully with

social issues and support communities both on and off campus.

SASA proudly supports 18 Million Rising through community engagement + fundraising efforts.

We are inspired by their work in education, mobilization, and organizing within Asian American communities, and we stand

with their mission to advance collective political action, racial justice, and a more liberated future for all marginalized peoples.

SASA has previously supported Apna Ghar (2015-6 + 2024-5), Pratham USA (2023-4), and Cradles to Crayons (2023).

Our outreach efforts take many forms, and are designed to combine cultural tradition with meaningful service + community engagement.

We are partnered with City Elementary, a Hyde Park school supporting neurodiverse learners,
through a weekly volunteer program held e
very Friday from 2-3 PM.

SASA members share and teach South Asian history and culture through

interactive lessons + activities designed to engage young students and spark curiosity.

Interested students can sign up here – no prior teaching experience required,
just enthusiasm and a willingness to engage and connect with young minds through education.

We host Langar, an annual winter event rooted in the Sikh tradition of service + equality.

Langar offers free meals, and creates a space to share
food + connection across backgrounds and learn about Sikh values.

This event is open to the wider campus community, and attendees are encouraged to
bring a scarf, bandana, or other head covering as a sign of respect for the space and practice.

For a small fee per hand, volunteer student artists create mehendi

designs in support of SASA's partner organizations and advocacy initiatives.

Mehendi, or henna, is a traditional form of body art with deep cultural and historical

significance across South Asia, practiced across regions, communities, and generations.

These events are open to the campus community and offer an accessible

way to engage with South Asian culture in a meaningful and welcoming setting.
